According to the 2011 Indian census, it is the sixth-most populous city and the fourth-most populous urban agglomeration in India. The Chennai Metropolitan Area, encompassing the city and its adjoining regions, ranks as the 36th-largest urban area globally by population.

Chennai: A Global Tourism and Cultural Destination

Chennai is a top destination for tourists, ranking as the 43rd-most visited city globally in 2015 and among the most-visited Indian cities by foreign tourists. Additionally, Chennai is part of the Smart Cities Mission, aiming to develop it into one of India’s 100 smart cities.

Health Tourism and Quality of Living

Known as India’s health capital, Chennai attracts 45% of health tourists visiting India and 30-40% of domestic health tourists, offering world-class medical facilities.
